Defences come in many forms. They all have three characteristics: We all use them – or they use us. They exist as a way of protecting against feelings of anxiety. They are irrational. Denial. Denial is an inability to accurately perceive the extent or severity of a problem. “I don’t care what you say, I know myself, and I’m not an alcoholic.” “Yes, I use drugs, but I’m not the sort of person who abuses them.” ”Sure, I had been drinking, but that’s not what caused the accident.” Rationalizing. Rationalization refers to the manufacture or invention of reasons for problem behaviour that make it seem OK.“I’m drinking too much, but it’s because I’m under a lot of stress at present” “I have to do drugs because I’m so depressed” “I’m not old enough to consider completely giving up drugs.” Externalizing. Externalizing may be defined as blaming your behaviour on outside forces or circumstances.“It’s my wife’s nagging that makes me want to drink.” “I can’t quit unless I know my family is 100% behind me.” “I can’t think about quitting til I get my work situation straightened out.” Minimizing. Minimizing is the practice of discounting the importance of a problem, so as to make change seem less necessary.“My drinking isn’t that bad yet.” “I’m not that far down, I don’t need to give drugs up entirely at this point.” “My family is exaggerating, the accident wasn’t that big a deal.” Intellectualizing. Intellectualizing is focusing on semantics or trivial disputes in order to distract from the larger issue. “I saw a doctor who told me I probably wasn’t an alcoholic.” “Alcoholism is genetic and no one else in my family is an alcoholic, so I can’t be.” “I know there are psychologists who claim addiction isn’t a disease, so why should I believe you?” Fantasy. Fantasy is retreating into unrealistic dreams or expectations as a way out of real problems “I’m going to be a big star someday, and all this will be forgotten.” “Once I get back with my wife, everything will be fine.” “I’m getting a lot of money from my lawsuit, that will solve all my problems.”
